Hannah Hendee was born about 1688A previous version of this profile and other internet family trees list Hannah's birth as July 14, 1665 in New London, but no source has been located. Where/when/how did this date originate? to Richard Hendee and Hannah Elderkin, perhaps in Kennilworth or Norwich in New London County, Connecticut. She married Samuel Belden 14 January 1685 (24 January 1686 N.S.) in Wethersfield, Connecticut. Hannah died a few years after her husband, 20 January 1742 (31 January 1743 N.S.). |
The first publication found which asserts an identity for Hannah Hendee, daughter of Richard Hendee and Hannah Elderkin, and wife of Samuel Belden, was published in 1866. It seems the author consulted probate records of Richard Hendee of Norwich, deceased 1670, when stating that his children, who were made heirs, were Jonathan, Richard, and Hannah, and that John Elderkin, their maternal grandfather, was made guardian. One "R.D. Smith, Esq.," of Guilford, whose own source may have been "Miss Sally Handy" of the same place (b. 1750, d. 1849), appears to have contributed the fact that daughter Hannah Hendee "married Samuel Belding of Wethersfield, Jan. 14, 1685."Frances Manwaring Calkins, History of Norwich, Connecticut: From Its Possession by the Indians to the Year 1866, (Hartford: H.P. Haven, 1866) 178; digital images, Internet Archive (https://archive.org/stream/historyofnorwich1866caul#page/178/mode/2up : accessed 28 August 2015). If the source is Sally Handy, she could have been in position to have second-hand knowledge of these people and their relationships, which would make her a somewhat credible if not ideal source. It may be interesting to research circumstances in which Hannah and Samuel would have met. Hannah Belden's death record indicates she 74 years old on 20 January 1742/3 when she died,"Connecticut Deaths and Burials, 1772-1934," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F7VH-KJQ : accessed 30 August 2015), Hannah Belding, 20 Jan 1742; citing Rocky Hill, Hartford, Connecticut, reference 13; FHL microfilm 3,360. which would fix her birth date about 1668, and her father and mother were only married for about five years (1665-1670)b before his death, so this is a reasonable date. We can easily establish Samuel and Hannah Belden as adults in the vital records of Wethersfield. "Samuell" and Hannah were married there 14 January 1685/6 by Captain Samuell Tallcott; children ascribed to Beldens of those names are recorded between 1689 to 1704, along with an infant whose birth and death in 1687 and 1688 whose mother's name was not recorded; Hannah, widow of Samuel dies 20 Jan 1741/2; and we see the death of only one eligible Samuel a few years earlier on 27 Dec 1738."Wethersfield, Hartford Co., CT, Vital Records from Barbour, 1634-1868 - BACKUS to BILLINGS Transcribed by Coralynn Brown," DUNHAM - WILCOX - TROTT - KIRK (http://dunhamwilcox.net/barbour/wethersfield_barbour_b1.htm : accessed/[https://web.archive.org/web/20150829035337/http://dunhamwilcox.net/barbour/wethersfield_barbour_b1.htm archived 28 August 2015]). |
