Descendants of George Phelps, the Emigrant This history perpetuates the idea that George was a son of William Phelps of Tewkesbury, which we know has been disproven. [Either George arrived on the Mary and John in 1630, or as others believe, he sailed from Weymouth, Dorset, England in 1633, as best can be determined, aboard the Recovery.] He came to Windsor in 1635, and married Phillury Randall there in 1637. She died in 1648, and he then married in 1648, the widow Frances Dewey, being her third husband. This claims her first husband was a Joseph Clark, by whom she had one daughter, Mary Clark, who married John Strong, Jr. Mr. Clark was the son of one of three brothers, William, Thomas, or George, of whom Harris says: “These three bro’s were in Dorchester in 1630, where they died soon and nearly at the same time. A gravestone was erected to their memory with this inscription: ‘Here lie three Clarkes; their accounts are even, Entered on earth and carried up to Heaven.’ (Possibly, her first husband was a Joseph Clark, but he was not the Joseph Clark who died in 1641 leaving children Joseph and Mary who married Joseph Bird in 1659 as discussed in “The Great Migration”.) She married second in 1638 or 9, Thomas Dewey, who came from Sandwich, England, to Dorchester, 1633, and to Windsor in 1638, where he died 27 Mar 1648, leaving five children; his widow married third Mr. Phelps, as above, and, with him and her own children, removed to Westfield, Mass., where she died 27 Sept 1690. His removal from Windsor to Westfield was probably about 1670. This record continues with the families of their children. |
