George Phelps |
There has been a lot of research about George Phelps, many articles and publications. There have been a lot of assumptions made about his origins. After a study of the sources and stories about him and here are listed a few myths that are perpetuated. #1 George Phelps probably did not arrive on the Mary and John. He probably arrived in 1634 aboard the Recovery. #2 We don't know his origins. DNA has proved he was not a brother of William Phelps, the Colonist from Crewkerne, England. (Although, he was probably related in some way.) #3 The Phelpses, both William and George, were not of the Tewkesbury Phelpses. His origin and his parents are unknown. The William Phelps of this family remained in England conducting business. Additionally, the recruitment for the colonists at this time for Massachusetts Bay Co. was being conducted in the Dorset, Somerset counties in the south west of England. #4 His 2nd wife, Frances Randall Clark Dewey Phelps was the daughter of Philip Randal and the sister of George's 1st wife Phillury Randall. #5 Frances, widow of Mr. Clark--he was not "Joseph" Clark. In any primary source, his name is unknown. Frances Randall was not married to Joseph Clark. (Joseph Clark, wife unknown, had two children: Joseph and Mary. Joseph, Jr. died in 1659, Mary married Joseph Bird--not to be confused with Mary Clark, daughter of Frances, widow, who married John Strong. Joseph, Sr. made a Will in 1639, his wife was dead, he made arrangements for the Church to care for his two children. They were orphaned in 1641. They were not the children of Frances Randall, and Frances Randall was not married to this Joseph Clark. The widow Frances Clark had married Thomas Dewey 3 years prior to Joseph Clark's death.) #1, #2 #3 #4 are all addressed in: George Phelps-info from brizendine.org http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/13693691/person/148272710/mediax/10? pgnum=1&pg=32814&pgpl=pidpgNum #5 New England, The Great Migration and The Great Migration Begins, 1620-1635 -- JOSEPH CLARK and under THOMAS DEWEY. http://interactive.ancestry.com/2496/42521_b158313-00186/23938?backurl=http%3a%2f%2fsearch.ancestry. com%2fcgi-bin%2fsse.dll%3fdb%3dGreatMigration%26h%3d23938%26ti%3d0%26indiv%3dtry%26gss%3dpt%26ssrc%3 dpt_t13693691_p29329884443_kpidz0q3d29329884443z0q26pgz0q3d32768z0q26pgplz0q3dpid&ssrc=pt_t13693 691_p29329884443_kpidz0q3d29329884443z0q26pgz0q3d32768z0q26pgplz0q3dpid&backlabel=ReturnRecord#? imageId=42521_b158313-00185 |
