Notes

Some of the information found here has since been questioned or found incorrect, such as the Phelps family coming from Tewkesbury when all the other recruits were from Dorset and Somerset counties. This information was most likely taken from “The Phelps Family in America” which has been discussed. Some sources even contend George Phelps actually arrived a few years later, probably on the Recovery in 1633.

Also the information about Joseph Clark as Frances’ first husband is not correct. “The Great Migration” states her husband was not Joseph Clark. The Joseph Clark family used here is also found in “The Great Migration” under Joseph Clark, but his wife died in April 1639, after Frances had married Thomas Dewey, and the children listed here are not correct for Frances. Joseph Clark’s son Joseph died in 1659 only mentioning his sister, Mary, as next of kin in his Will, and she was yet unmarried. (She married Joseph Bird late 1659 or early 1660.) This #1 Joseph who married Alice Pepper is from a third Clark family altogether. #2 Hannah who married Hopkins was born (rather than married) in 1660, and was the granddaughter of Frances, the daughter of Mary. #3 Mary is the only child of Frances and Mr. Clark that is correct. Mary 1638-1663 married in 1656 John, the son of John Strong.

The rest of the Phelps family information seems to be correct.

GEORGE PHELPS arrived in Dorchester, and then moved to Windsor, CT in 1635. He married in 1637, Phillury, the daughter of Phillip Randall. She died in 1648, and he married a second time, Frances Dewey, widow of both Clark and Thomas Dewey. This marriage took place Mar 22, 1649. George Phelps died in 1687, and Frances died Sept 7, 1690.

Phillip Randall came to America arriving July 24, 1633, from Weymouth, England, with Joan, his wife, and two children, Phillury and Abraham. Abraham Randall married, in 1640, Mary Ware, who died in 1677. He married a second time in 1684, Elizabeth, widow of John Kirby. Abraham Randall died childless in 1690, leaving his estate “to the children of George Phelps.”
