FUNERAL SERVICES FOR MAJOR ALBERT CHARLES HOUGHTON, who died at the home of his son, Charles in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, Thursday, were held Saturday afternoon at the Finefrock Funeral Home. Rev. Dr. S. B. Salmon of the First Methodist Episcopal Church, assisted by Rev. Harold Flye of St. Andrews, Tennessee, conducted the last rites. Major Houghton was born at Spencer, Indiana. For a number of years he resided in this city. While a resident here he joined the First Methodist Episcopal Church which connection he retained until death. Major Houghton became a corporal at the age of 19 while serving in the Civil War and was promoted to the rank of Major when he was 24. He was a veteran of seven major engagements and more than 30 minor battles. During the declining years of his life, he made Florida his home. Surviving relatives include his widow, Mrs. Maria Houghton; two sons, Charles of Ft. Wayne and Henry of Iowa City, Iowa; one daughter, Mrs. Grace Flye of St. Andrews, Tennessee, and seven grandchildren. Major Charles Houghton, Ft. Wayne; Robert Clifford, Cleveland; Lee, Albert and Larry Twitchell of this city and Albert Clifford of Akron were pall bearers. Burial was made in Mansfield Cemetery. HOUGHTON, ALBERT CHARLES, b. 12, 12, 1841, at Spencer, O. Lawyer. Educated at University of Delaware, O. Graduate Law College University of Cincinnati, 1868. Served in the Civil War, 1861-1865, in 2d Regt. Ohio Cavalry; in the campaigns in the Indian Territory, 1861-2; in Kentucky and Tennessee, 1863; with the Army of the Potomac, where he served on the staff of General McIntosh, 1864-5. Was engaged in seven of the great battles and thirty-one lesser actions of the war; severely wounded and permanently disabled at the battle of Five Forks, April 1, 1865. Entered service a private, mustered out on account of wounds with the rank of Captain and brevetted Major by the President of the United States for gallant service at battle of Five Forks. Member of the Military Order of the Logal Legion. She had rare qualities of mind and heart, exalted purity, sweetness and power of character, and ripe culture. Married 2d, 11, 30, 1910 Myra Twitchell, b at Brimfield, O., 10, 27, 1844. She was employed many years in successful educational work, in both letters and art, and latterly has been a professional artist in water color; has traveled widely in United States and Europe; is a fluent writer and a devoted worker in church and club circles. Dr. Houghton is a graduate of Ohio State University; of the Medical Department of Johns Hopkins University; was attached to the staff of Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research in New York, and now a medical missionary at Wuhu, China, in hospital work and doing research in tropical diseases.
