This is my dad's graduation picture (1944) -- he was drafted into the Navy right out of high school. That is also his Navy portrait. Dad was a Navy SeaBee (Construction Battlion). Dad attained the rank of Gunner's Mate 3rd Class (which he said was like a sargeant in the Army). He was the man in charge of the armory on Okinawa, he handed out weapons to men who went on patrols. The other 2 pictures are of dad on Okinawa in 1945, the last island before the planned Invasion of Japan. -- Dad was alsways handy with carpentry stuff and made several footlockers for the Airforce guys on Okinawa. To pay back the favor, they took him for a ride in a B-29 bomber and did a fly over of what used to be Hiroshima. He said all that was left was a big crater in the ground.-- They said "the A-bomb" save thousands of American lives. As my dad explained it, the SeaBees went in in the first wave with the Marines in an amphibious assault and he would have been in that first wave. But the "bomb" ended the war and they never hadto have the very bloody invasion of Japan. So my dad's life is one of those lives the bomb saved. -- The war ended, he came home, he met my mom and they got married in 1949. They started a family and I am one of their children. So not only did the bomb save dad's life, it saved mine too, as had dad went ashore in the first wave assault on the idland of Japan chances are good he would not have survived. But because he survived, I was born in 1962 and life continued on. -- As far as the bomb and the Japanese attacking Pearl Harbor in 1941, dad would always say... "they started it, and by God we finished it"... on the back side of mom and dad's grave they posted a brass plaque honoring his time spent in the US Navy. |
