Libertyville Independent dated Thursday, April 19, 1923 Aged Resident of County Dies At His Home In Antioch Just as we go to press, word comes that Homer Hendee, aged 96, died this morning at his home in Antioch. Mr. Hendee was about the oldest resident of the county, and was well known in Libertyville. It is said that he never missed coming to the Lake County Fair, since it started. He was one of the original officials of the fair. ----- Libertyville Independent dated Thursday, April 26, 1923 Homer Hendee, 97, Oldest In Lake County Is Dead Pioneer Resident Died at Home of Daughter in Antioch, Wednesday Night Homer Hendee, 97 years old, believed to be the oldest resident of Lake county, died Wednesday, April 18, at the home of his daughter at Antioch, following a brief illness. Mr. Hendee was one of the best known men in this county, and every season for 56 years he danced a jig at the Lake County Fair to show the attendants how to keep spry. That his pleasure from dancing had much to do with his longevity and good health was shown by the fact that until two years ago he never had been ill and since that time his health was as good as ever, until three weeks ago when his memory failed. He took to his bed Wednesday and death followed a few hours later. Mr. Hendee was born at Pike, Wyoming county, N. Y., Sept. 17, 1825. His wife was Cordelie Woodruff, who died about 25 years ago. There were fived children, three of whom survive. They are: Mrs. Gideon Thayer of Antioch, where he died; Frank Hendee of Modesto, Calif., and Wilber Hendee of Waukegan. The sons who are dead are: Albert Hendee, who died three years ago at Richmond, Texas, and who was well known in Lake county, and Clifford, who died many years ago. He also is survived by six granddaughters and two grandsons, and nine great grandchildren. He came to Fremont township in 1865 and entered the farming business at Hendee station, which was named for him. He lived for a number of years at Libertyville after retiring. Until five years ago he traveled much of the time. Funeral Saturday morning at 10 o’clock from the late residence. Interment in Libertyville. ----- The online “Illinois Deaths and Stillbirths” database has him as “Homer Hindu”. The Illinois Death Index does have him as “Homer Hendee”. |
