Henry Holman Hendee was born on 27 April 1817 in his parents' home in Ashford, Windham County, Connecticut, USA. He was the son of Abel Cornelius Hendee (1789-1843) and his wife, Cynthia Eaton (Topliff) Hendee (1794-1848). By his mother's side he was a direct descendant of Mayflower passenger, Stephen Hopkins (bef.1581-abt.1644). [1] [2] On 18 June 1837 Henry H. Hendee married Sophronia T. Snow (abt.1817-1897) in Mansfield, Tolland, Connecticut, USA. [3] The couple lived in Mansfield, Tolland County, Connecticut, where they had 4 children: [4] Cynthia Ann Hendee, 1838–1897 Alline Augusta Hendee. 1843–1921 William Henry Hendee, 1845–1890 Martha A. Hendee, 1852–1879 (b: Waterford, Connecticut) Between 1845 and 1850, the Hendee family left Connecticut, moving to Cuyhoga County, Ohio, which had earlier been part of Connecticut's "Western Reserve" territory and consequently had attracted many Connecticut settlers, especially after Ohio became a USState in 1803. Henry and Sophronia "Handy" [sic] were recorded on the 1850 US Census as 33 years old, born in Connecticut, married with 3 living children: Cynthia Handy, age 12; A. A. Hady, age 7; and Wm. H. Handy, 5 years old. They were living in Cleveland's ward 3, Cuyahoga, Ohio, United States, where Henry was a "Carpenter". They lived in an apartment building with several other couples and single workers. [5] Ten years later, the 1860 US Census recorded the Hendee family as having moved again to Pontoosuc Township, Hancock County, Illinois, United States. Their family now included 8-year-old Martha Hendee, b: 1852 on a trip back to Connecticut. Henry Hendee was a "Carpenter". [6] After the Civil War, the 1870 US Census recorded yet another family move, this time to Lake Township, Cook County, Illinois, United States. Only their 25-year-old son, William Henry Hendee was still living with them as their 3 daughters had now married and had their own households. Henry was employed as a "Carpenter". [7] Their only son, William Henry Hendee, married Margaret Martha Kennedy, (1852–1912), in 1873 in Cook County, Illinois. They were recorded as living in Burlington, Des Moines County, Iowa, USA, on the 1880 US Census. [8] William H. Hendee died on 9 May 1890in Chicago, Cook, Illinois. Like his father, he had been a Carpenter. [9] Henry and Sophronia's youngest daughter, Martha Hendee, had married Calvin Gay in Cook County, Illinois, around 1869. They had 3 daughters. Calvin died at 42 years old on 21 July 1878 at their home in Cicero, Cook, Illinois. Alas, Martha (Hendee) Gay alsopassed away, on 20 March 1879, in Cicero, Illinois.[10] Their 3 orphaned children moved in with their maternal grand-parents in Lake Twp., Cook Co., Illinois, where they were all recorded in the household of "Henry Hindee" and "Sophia Hindee" (thank you Ancestrylibrary.com for the reference!). Henry was still noted as a Carpenter. He was said to be 68 and Sophronia 65 years old [sic they both were 63, b: 1817]. Their 3 grandchildren were called Mary [sic=Clara] Gay, 7; Jessie Gay (girl), 4; and Myrtle, [sic=Georgina Marian] Gay, 1 year old. [11] Sophronia (Snow) Hendee is listed on the Illinois Statewide Death Index as having passed away on 20 April 1897 in Dunning, Cook County, Illinois, USA. She was 80 years old. She was buried at Oak Woods Cemetery near her daughter, Martha A. (Hendee) Gay, who died in 1880, but Sophronia does not have a Find A Grave Memorial (This private cemetery has over 38,000 graves and most are not registered).[12] In 1896, before Sophronia (Snow) Hendee passed away, her orphaned grand-daughter, (Mary) Clara Gay, b: 1870 in Illinois, married a family friend, Frank Northrup, b: 1856. They married in Litchfield, Litchfield County, Connecticut. After Sophronia's passing, her widower husband, Henry H. Hendee, now 80 years old, left Illinois and joined Clara and Frank in Sharon Township, Litchfield County, Connecticut. He was recorded there as an 83-year-old "Boarder" living with Clara's younger sister: Marian Gay, age 27, on a farm in Sharon Township, Litchfield County, Connecticut, USA. Frank and Clara (Gay) Northrup, who had no children, lived next door. [13] Ten years later, "Harry H. Handea" [sic = Henry H. Hendee], now 93 years old (b: 1817) was still living on the same farm in Sharon Township, Litchfield County, Connecticut. He was now living with his 2 unmarried grand-daughters: Jessie Gay, age 33; and Georgina M. Gay, 31 years old. Each of the 3 family members had their "own income". Their household included 3 servants: a Farm Laborer, a Housekeeper, and a Chauffeur. Frank and Clara (Gay) Northrup still lived on their farm next door with a Farm Laborer and a Chauffeur in their household. [14] Henry H. Hendee passed away on 8 January 1912 on his farm in Sharon Township, Litchfield, Connecticut, USA, at 94 years old. Unfortunately, by the time he died, only his grand-children were still alive as witnesses. As a result, both his middle name and the year of his birth were mis-transcribed. [15] Henry H. Hendee was buried at Hillside Cemetery, Sharon, Litchfield County, Connecticut, USA. His middle name, originally "Holman" had become "Holmes" and his birth-year of 1817 had become 1818 although his actual birth-day: 27 April, was accurate. His grandchildren erected a grave-stone at his burial and its photo is on his Find A Grave Memorial. |
