Sarah E. Partridge's father was born in Connecticut and her mother was born in New York. She married Dr. Lorenzo Hendee (Jul. 17, 1821, Pavilion, New York-Oct. 1, 1875, Linn County, Missouri) at Pavilion Aug 11, 1851. They had four children, but only two lived to adulthood: John William and Nettie Assie. Sarah was living at Hudson, Saint Croix County, Wisconsin, in 1860 with her husband and three children: Melvina, born 1852, New York; John W., born June 5, 1856, at Hudson; and Nettie, born June 24, 1858,at Hudson. She had relocated to Locust Creek, Linn County, Missouri, by 1870. The census taker found her there with her husband, Lorenzo, and two surviving children: John and Nettie. Her husband died sometime before 1880 and she relocated to Brookfield, Linn County, Missouri, where she was working as a school teacher and living with her daughter, Nettie, who was working as a store clerk. They were living in a boarding house at the time. Sarah and Nettie moved to Los Angeles, California soon thereafter where they joined John W. Hendee. Nettie went into business with Margaret Beeman and opened an art supply, fancy goods, and children's clothing store in 1892. All three were living at John's house at 219 E. 27th Street in 1895. John Hendee was operating a fruit and candy store at 720 Carondelet Street in Los Angeles. By 1904 John Hendee was no longer in business and was working as a teamster and renting a room at 127 E. 3rd Street, whereas Sarah and Nettie were boarders in the house Nettie's business partners, Niram and Margaret Beeman, at 223 E 27th Street. The two families must have been close, since these business partners are all buried together. John was divorced and still living in Los Angeles in June 1930. |
