Joanne Hendee

Joanne Jarvis Hendee

Early Life & Education
Joanne Jarvis Hendee was born in 1948 in Rochester, New York, and grew up in Webster, New York. Raised in the close-knit suburban community of Webster during the post-World War II era, she developed early values of service, responsibility, and community involvement.

She went on to pursue higher education at the University of Rochester School of Nursing in Rochester, New York, where she completed her nursing education. Her academic training provided a strong clinical foundation and instilled in her a lifelong commitment to compassionate care and patient advocacy.

Nursing Career
Following her graduation, Joanne built a professional career in nursing, dedicating herself to the care and well-being of others. As a registered nurse, she applied her clinical knowledge, attention to detail, and empathy in service to patients and families. Her years in healthcare reflected both professional skill and genuine compassion—qualities that would later define her volunteer work.

Marriage & Family Life
In the early 1970s, Joanne married Paul Edwin Hendee. Together they built a life grounded in family, faith, and community. Throughout her marriage, Joanne balanced professional responsibilities with family life, maintaining strong personal connections while continuing to serve others through her work.

Volunteer Work in Retirement
In retirement, Joanne extended her commitment to health and service through volunteer leadership with the Area Agency on Aging for South Florida. Drawing on her nursing background, she became a volunteer health and wellness instructor, helping older adults live safer, healthier, and more independent lives.

Within the agency, she teaches several evidence-based programs, including:

  • “A Matter of Balance” – A workshop designed to help seniors reduce fear of falling, improve balance, and increase physical activity safely.
  • “Living With Diabetes” – Classes that provide education and practical strategies for managing diabetes and maintaining overall health.
  • “Powerful Tools for Caregivers” – A structured program that equips caregivers with skills to manage stress, build confidence, and care for themselves while supporting loved ones.
  • “Tai Chi For Arthritis” – A safe class that relieves pain, reduces falls, and improves the general quality of life.

Through these programs, Joanne continues to make a meaningful impact, empowering seniors and caregivers with knowledge, practical skills, and encouragement.  Joanne has achieved and maintains certification in all of these classes that are done either in a classroom setting or online.

Creative Pursuits – Stained Glass Art
In addition to her healthcare and volunteer commitments, Joanne has cultivated a long-standing passion for stained glass artistry. This creative hobby allows her to design and assemble colorful glass pieces, blending craftsmanship with artistic expression. Her work in stained glass reflects patience, precision, and creativity—qualities that mirror her professional and volunteer life.  Her stained glass gallery can be seen here:  https://the-hendees.com/GlassGallery/
